The last remaining part of the SP ng. in the Owens Valley was pretty flat and uninteresting.....except for the fact that Mount Whitney and the southern Sierras were in the background. That made it VERY interesting when the light was right. This shot was taken on August 29, 1959, late summer and the mountain snows are gone so it's a bit less dramatic. This was the last regular operation of steam on the SP. Like the DRGW, on the SP ng. steam outlasted standard gauge steam. It was also in the early days of my efforts at photography....fortunately others did much better.
