Fritz: From what you describe of that day, you and my family were on the train that day. Interestng experience.
I remember the director getting thoroughy PO'd cause the engineer couldn't spot the train exactly where he wanted it- within an inch or two. (BTW, he was a real gold plated AH) After many tries, the problem was finally solved by spotting a Coke case underneath the engineer's cab window. Two takes later the fuss was over.
I tried to engage Gregory Peck in conversation, but it was like trying to talk to a wall. He wasn't about to waste his breath on the likes of me.
If we are talking about the same day, do you remember the flap with the young girl who was playing Peck's daughter. It was funny. She was maybe 12 or so but was playing the part of a much younger kid. In rehearsals she would deliver her lines perfectly, but during a live shoot she would blow them - I think delibertely. The director, John Huston, was furious, to the point of telling her mother to "get that little bitch out of my sight", or words to that effect.
I agree on the food, Fritz. Delicious. Best part of the experience.
