Jason,
464 arrived at Crossroads with a single chime which was loud and ear piercing! Permanant hearing loss was a danger if you were anywhere near it when the whistle blew! The crews hated it.
For most of the time when 464 was last in service on the Huckleberry, she carried either the #2's five chime or a Pere Marquette six chime. The #2 is still serviceable and wearing the five chime, which is one of the nicest sounding whistles I've ever heard.
The new whistle is a Southern Pacific passenger six chime. It needed some valve work, so didn't get put on in August, when 464 went back into service. 464 was fitted with a 3 chime flat top instead, similar to one she carried in 1950. It's a nice sounding whistle, but it's easy to overblow. Ray developed a pretty nice touch with it though and it really sounds nice when heard from a distance.
Got to get out there this weekend and hear the new whistle.
