K-28 #251 (#471) 1st Run out of Skagway

November 28, 2005 08:10AM
On November 28, 1942, U.S.A #251 (ex D&RGW #471) made the first run of a K-28 on the White Pass & Yukon Route. If I understand correctly, she was a helper on the Northbound #1 mixed train, behind #66. #69 was also helping, and cut off at White Pass, where the #80 then cut in and helped to Log Cabin. I could be wrong on something there, WP&Ymike correct me if I am!
Of interest is that of the other locomotives that the #251 ran with that day, all still survive. #66 was used as rip-rap, #69 is now back in operable condition in Skagway, and the #80 is back home on the Sumpter Valley as our #20. Her rebuild is beginning, and if anyone is interested in contributing to her restoration fund, please contact either myself or go to svry.com. If only the #251 could have made it... it's something to ponder.
Thanks to WP&Ymike for his efforts and research into the White Pass during the war years.
