In a recent post, I noted that one could see photos of the WM trains with 7 to 10 steam locomotives shoving trains up the Blackwater grade north of Elkins in the March 1954 issue of Trains Magazine. It was a wonderful TRAINS issue of WM but MY memory failed me as the dramatic action photo that was retained in my mind was actually of 5 ALCO RS-3 raising clouds of dust as the mid train helpers in the coal train. I also admit there were good clouds of WV coal smoke occasionally from the trains on the grade.
Real color photos of these seven to ten Consolidation powered trains can be seen in the book “The Western Maryland Album" by W.P. Price on page 67 to 93.
Also some wonderful black and white photos are of this tremendous operation in the book: “the Western Maryland RY – Fireball and Black Diamonds”, by R. Cook and K. Zimmerman on pages 167 to 184.
