I dug out my old copy of Ghost RR's of Tennessee and looked for this photo. I knew I had seen it before. Pg.141.
Sulzer doesn't say where it was taken, but he provides more info on the engine and the line.
The NC&SL 297 was originally the Nashville and Tuscaloosa RR #5. Baldwin built her in 1889 and she wore plate number 9794. HUSKY 15"X18" cylinders! Four other Baldwin 2-8-0's worked on the line, as did two smaller Porter 2-6-0s. It looks like later in life poor 297 went over to the dark side of being standard gauged. (Ouch.)
The N&T grew into the "Centerville Branch" of the NC&SL. This was a north/ south line located west of Nashville. The line headed south out of Dickson Co., wandering down thru Hickman and Lewis Counties. Freight traffic consisted of iron, phosphate and timber.
Now for my two cents worth, shouldn't some budding Tennessee G scaler make a neat garden pike with this line for a prototype. I for one would just love to see if someone can dig up some more photos of this line. Anybody in that area interested in doing some hunting?
