I got a lucky shot on video in 1986 while video taping VIA Rail passenger trains with the old F-units. One evening when the Super Contintental left Jasper station, a track torpedo went off as the unit was about to leave the passenger siding.
The engine was about 2 coach lengths past me and I had panned on the diesel. The train came to a grinding halt, and a minute or so later an eastbound unit coal train came clattering into town from around the blind curve beyond the passenger track. Lucky I was not hand holding the camera or it would have bobbled when the torpedo went off for sure. First and only time I had ever seen or heard one.
