The December issue of TRAINS has an article by Steve Patterson called "Alamosa Bound." It's about traveling to, and then around, Colorado and New Mexico in December 1963. (This is the issue of TRAINS with the announcement of the 2005 preservation award to the Friends, for work on the Chama coal tipple.)
In addition, the Winter issue of CLASSIC TRAINS has an article, with many B&W photos, by Frank Barry called "Final Winter for the Narrow-Gauge"--1963-64. For a short while, Barry lived and worked in Chama and had easy access to the railroad--well, "easy," except for the fact that highway 17 was still a gravel road that could be, and was, shut down in the winter because of too much snow.
As always, it's great to read the accounts of knowledgeable railfans as they describe their experiences with the D&RGW narrow gauge while it was still the real deal. For me, the name Frank Barry is new, and his photos are a treat.
Two thumbs way up.
