The usual events along all Colorado & New Mexico railroads during fall months, were to sell the cattle & sheep. They were then herded/driven by cowboys to the railroad loading sites, placed into "stock cars" and away they went to slaughter.
Rancher's kept a smaller herd on land with grazing capability, this group was the "reproduction stock." Cattle & Sheep are born in the Spring.
