Jeff, you received some good advice from the other responders to your post.
If you don't have any hands-on experience with steam, one suggestion would be to do some self-education about locomotive construction and operation. I would suggest you buy a copy of the book 'Basic Steam Locomotive Maintenance'. It has sections on firing, etc. It will help you understand some of the things you will be looking at and being told by others. The bookstore at CRRM may have it or, I know it's available through our bookstore at the Strasburg.
