Well Smitty...
Not real sure what the point of your post is here, but to answer your inquiries:
Went to the C&TS in May 2005 to work on the CRF, pre-season so painfully there were no trains running yet (missed it by one week). Not independently wealthy so did not go back this year to ride. (2000 mile round trip, spent well over $1000 dollar in lodging, food and gifts-sure do like your painting Mary Cardin).
Yes I am a "Card carrying" member of the Friends of the C&TS since 1996, been to four work sessions and damn proud of it too. Wear my work session t-shirts all the time around town much to my wife's dismay (don't you have any other t-shirts'?) Just like a number of other Friends I have donated many hours to the cause.
I too have been to the D&SNG, when I ride the C&TS it is a given that I will ride the D&SNG. In fact, in 2002 I had C&TS tickets that went unused due to fire closure and rode the D&SNG DGO to Hermosa for my NG fix. Declined to have my C&TS tickets refunded.
I have stayed in the Branding Iron, Narrow Gauge Railroad Inn and Vista Del Rio. Ate in all the restaurants, shopped most of the stores, including Bob Zorn's (always a must), Roger Hogans, Chama Steam, etc, etc.
I have sent dozens of friends from my area to ride the train. Yes I support narrow gauge country and help the local economy. Several thousand dollars each visit, years 1980, 1982, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2005. I always cautiously, and humbly inform the local merchants that I am there spending cash in their establishments because of the train and the local scenery, in that order.
Have I done good?
