San Juan/Shavano Survivors

August 08, 2005 05:56PM
Hi, Jeff, and welcome aboard:
Several of the San Juan/Shavano coaches have survived.
In Durango can be found 4 closed vestibule coaches, but all were rebuilt with steel bodys by the D&RGW back in the 1970's. The four are #'s 312, 319, 323, and 327. #319 was a Jackson & Sharpe coach and still retains a rebuilt version of it's narrow windows.
Also in Durango can be found the last of the D&RGW owned Parlor Cars from the San Juan, the "Alamosa". This car was rebuilt into a coach and has since been remodeled back into sort of a Club Car by the D&S.
The only survivors of the consist that are still wood are at Knotts Berry Farm in Buena Park, CA.
Coaches #310, #325, and #326 are still wood, but have been refitted with bus seats.
Also at Knotts is Parlor Car "Chama", but it has been rebuilt into a Combine.
The last survivor still in it's original San Juan glory is Parlor Car "Durango", which Knotts has recently refurbished.
There is only one surviving Baggage Car body, on the ground at the Colorado RR Museum in Golden, but I'm not sure if it was one of the ones that carried a Delco Generator or not.
Baggage #126, at Durango, is now a concession car, and resembles a coach.
There are several RPO bodys around, none have been fully restored, but #60 at the Colorado RR Museum is the closest to it so far. It really needs a pair of new trucks.
The Shavano's Parlor Cars were not equipped with Dinettes and were sold to Mexico in the 40's.
Hope this helps, Kevin Cook, as advertised, is a great source of information on these cars.
