The problem of changing the middle rail from one side to the other was remedied with a piece of trackwork is known as a "draw". Using two frogs, the middle rail merged with one side and emerged about half a rail-length on the opposite rail. No moving parts were employed. It's pretty hard to describe, and I have only seen one or two photos of it. I believe it was on the south leg.
