The C&TS does little or no winter running . The flanger mechanism on all of the C&TS engines are operable to my knowledge , but are latched in place . The D&SNG does a lot of winter running so the flangers may see more use . An engineer has to be very familiar with the road or have a pilot(a section man) with him .Hitting switches cattle guards or crossings can cause a lot of damage and possibly derail the locomotive .
