That was the last day of the John Craft marathon. I was onboard for the last weekend as John's assistant. Unfortunately for my shot I was the last one...closest to the track, but I did get to pan. This was the Sunday, right out of Antonito. Shortly thereafter we did the great location at MP289(Lava Mesa), then it was my turn along with two others to ride in a freight car ahead of 484. We were in the flat car ahead of the trash gon ahead of 484. Got to ride there all the way to Sublette, which was definately one of the thrills of the whole week for me. You can bet I rolled Betacam SP footage the whole way for the most part. 484 barking away behind us, and turn the camera around and see 497 working hard on the point about 8-9 cars ahead.
One of the best shots I got of the whole week though was not a planned runby shot. It was the evening of the 3-engine train. At Cumbres they split up the consist, and if you remember 484 took those loaded gons of ballast and a caboose to Antonito. I saw this little freight leave Cumbres, and dashed to Apache Canyon road, and got a super glint off the whole engine as it neared the crossing. Those are the same loads you see in the photo John posted on the runby outside Antonito on Sunday. Craft and I were pretty well wiped out after this week but I don't think there has been any organized charters that could match it for authenticity, variety, and great weather since!
Anyone who wants to see all this its in a video we did called "Rio Grande Steam Freights" 2 hours $34.95(VHS or DVD). Anyone thinking of doing a charter someday needs to have this for reference before starting anything!! It sets the bar pretty high for subsequent charters on the C&TS.
