The less expensive ones don't have a connector to plug them into an outside power source or an external antenna connection, and they also don't have a data port to get info into or out of them.
It's possible to pickup an outdated/more expensive unit off eBay.
As an example, I got a Garmin GPS II+ for $100 and I connect it to my laptop for trips, and yet I can run it solo off its batteries for hiking trips.
