I guess the sound comes of the valve gear and the fact its running with saturated steam (ok, the staurated steam means it can use the simple slide valves without complex lubrication systems). The sound is really quite different to all the other engines we have (with superheated steam and piston valves).
(On the picture bellow JR1 is a 1898 Porter of Jokioinen Railway, being also the only already scrapped engine in that picture)
