Engine Houses

I am doing research to scratch build an engine house. I want to learn what a typical engine house included besides simply providing a protective covering.
While not a maintenance/shops building for major repairs, what was typical of these facilities? Other than the obvious, I think, inspection pit and some commonly needed spare parts and simple tools, what could you expect to find?
