With the 3rd rail about to be treated to the wheels of Private Varnish of the A.A.P.R.C.O. special train, this clip might be of interest:
Dolores STAR--- May 17, 1901:
'The old narrow gauge railroad over Veta Pass with its famous "Mule Shoe" is being taken up, says the Alamosa Courier. All material that is of any value will be used elsewhere on the system. The Courier also says that the third rail is being laid between Alamosa and Antonito.'
[some of this rail went to PLCo, RGP&NRy line to Pagosa Springs]
What is not identified in the newspapers of the time was the date that the narrow gauge access was removed between Wagon Creek Junction west to
Alamosa. Is it possible that the inner rail was retained in those limits to continue access to the Grayback Branch, and Placer Iron Mine that was not abandoned until 1918? Within this date range the records indicate that Trinchera Estates Company owned or had rights over the Grayback Branch. Do not confuse this with the actual logging railroad built by Trinchera Estates Company south from Harrell down into high timber.
It is beleived that the ng inner rails existed from Alamosa to Wagon Creek Jct. till about 1910.
