Kevin,
I believe both the D&RGW and C&S had both adopted the use of metal sheathed "Murphy" roofs on box cars by the 20's. They were painted incidentally the color of the car bodys, but the paint would often peel off the galvanized sheet metal over time.
Roofwalks, I believe, were not to be painted, as I recall.
