Next to South Africa, Australia has the most 3' 6" gauge railways in the world. In all there are 10,000 miles (16200 km) in the states of Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania. Queensland has the lion's share where Queensland Rail (QR) a government owned corporation has 5,900 miles (9500 km)of track. On any week day, the QR network operates 900 train services and moves more than 400 000 tonnes of freight. Around 160 000 passengers use QR each day for long distance and commuter journeys.
Although the system now relies on electric and diesel power, it has retained 17 steam locomotives. Five of these are currently in working order and used on excursion trains. Another two are at present being overhauled.
