Well, The Yreka Western RR in nearby Yreka, Ca. came close to being a former railroad. This due to a tunnel fire and resulting closure of the south end of the Central of Oregon & Pacific RR (CORP). The Union Pacific's continued inability to provide empties to the YV just made matters worse.
After almost a year, the tunnel is open, shippers are starting to return and the city is looking into buying the railroad.
But they ain't out of the woods yet...
