Were not the GMAM Garratts more modern than the GL. I forget my history on these since its been 21 years since I was there. Anyway what is the TE comparison of the GMAM and the GL.
In 1984 the SAR barely had any 3 foot 6 inch Garratts working the mainlines. We could one on the somewhat regular ballast train working from Waterval Boven to Breyton. Interestingly on the return trip they hauled a dead GL back to Waterval Boven for eventual scrapping. I have a 16 x 20 of it on my wall in the family room shot with my Pentax 6x7. This was one of the last regular Garratt workings, other than Randfontain Estates Gold Mine Railway which we also visited the last day of the trip.
