Great bit of digging, thanks, Jeff. I'll bet you dollars to doughnuts that the abandonment of the line south of Hampden happened when the highway was widened to 4 lanes. Since Beets were on the decline and the cost for a bridge either over or under would have been prohibitive, there must have been a deal worked out.
I remember the dogleg in the line. When I worked for an RV accessories manufacturer back in the late '60's, I used to deliver to Sun Recreational Vehicles, which was just north of Hampden in the industrial park there. The C&S was behind the building and ended about 1/2 block to the south. It was always a nice change to take Riverside Drive and follow some of the old C&S rather than taking Santa Fe. Hampden was four lane and the Country Line ended at the North End of Westbound Hampden.
