Sorry, Steve - that's not what happened.
The Colorado Historical Society presented THE Georgetown Loop Railroad, Inc. with a set of unreasonable, *non-negotiable* contract terms, including a larger percentage of profits, a $10-million insurance policy, and only a five-year option to operate the Loop. As much as GLRR, Inc. would've liked to stay, these terms forced the Railroad to make the right business decision and depart the Loop.
As late as August 17, 2004 - after the CHS had announced Railstar as the new Loop operator in spite of Railstar having *no* 3-foot gauge steam power, GLRR's Mark Greksa wrote to CHS President Georgianna Contiguglia saying the Railroad was willing to re-enter negotiations with the Society. (Click on this link to see the letter: [www.savethetrain.org])
It was in late 2003/early 2004 that both the Society and the Railroad were aware of impending problems with the contract. It was at that time that the CHS should have cover their...bases...and started looking for new equipment. They did not, and after a brief (and abused) Request For Proposal process, they selected Railstar, and the scramble for narrow-gauge equipment was on.
All this information and more is available at the CHRRPA website - link below.
Fifty-two days and counting.
