Bill:
268 and all other narrow gauge engines had to run through the Royal Gorge as it was the mainline to Salida, Marshall Pass, Leadville, etc. I do not have my data handy, but the Royal Gorge line was built in the late 1870s and was later dual gauged. It remained dual gauge until sometime in the 1900 to 1915 period (1911 sticks in my mind for some reason). Will check the dates later. Until the K27s, all new narrow gauge motive power was unloaded and prepared for service at the Burnham shops in Denver.
