I have a 1902 trackwork book that debates the value of using tieplates. It would seem that their use was not widespread at that time. Some railroads reported to only used them on curves. As rail equipment evolved (got heavier), tie plates were required to spread the additional weight and keep from cutting the tie. Modern heavy rail plates can use up to 8 spikes to assist in holding gauge. The tie plates are also designed with a slight cant to the inside (to improve wheel/rail wear?).
