It's somewhat hard to tell if it's a Coffin pump from the picture, but, does look like one. I used a Coffin pump on the GTW 4070 in the early 80's. It is a centrifugal pump that uses a turbine to force water from the tender to a heater mounted in the smokebox and then through the checks to the boiler. They were fairly common on the NYC Hudsons. Biggest problem using one is that if you lose prime on the pump you have to reset it from the ground.
