Some Rio Grande engines were equipped with variable lead walschaert valve gear to allow less lead in full gear for better starting. This consisted of a modified combination lever that had a slotted connection to the radius rod. Linkage from the reversing shaft moved the radius rod closer to the valve stem in full gear, and farther apart in mid gear. You can see the arrangement in clear photos of the 3700 class 4-6-6-4’s. You will see a small bell crank mounted above the combination lever. I don’t recall seeing it on any other classes.
