Old joke - "if it fits through the fire hole door it's small enough" On an altogether more serious level the general guidence is the lumps should be about "fist sized". Large lumps mean big holes in the fire which can be bad and if much smaller it tends to disappear up the tubes without touching the sides. Stoker fired loco's generally run on smaller coal as large lumps can jam the screw...
