Yeah I have been in contact with some people on the progress of that locomotive since the work began. When I last saw 844 in the Cheyenne shop, it had no firebox, and no tube sheets either of course. Basically the boiler was completed gutted.
A friend of my dads that does some videoing for Gandy Dancer, and is on the board of the UPHS, Steve Watrous, went to Cheyenne earlier this year to film the installation of the new firebox.
I talked to one of the contractors doing the welding about 7 months ago. He was calling for my dad.
Here's some recent news about the Big Boy 4023 here in Omaha Nebraska:
They want to move it and the 6900 diesel about 30 blocks! They are going to take it apart. The cab will come off. The boiler will come off. Both engine unit's will be separated. It's going to be a BIG move...
My dad BETTER pull me out of school for this one, and if he doesn't then I will leave on my own and take the consequences of either being suspended for a week or having to attend Saturday school (which is basically sitting and doing nothing for 4 hours).
