I hate to differ with you (No I don't really, but it's polite), but the D&RG(W) was rarely financially healthy. If it wasn't the Santa Fe trying to lease the road then it was Jay Gould trying to take over over the General's objections or it was George Gould driving it into receivership by syphoning off all of its profits to build the Western Pacific.
The best days were when it was under the protection of the Federal Courts in Receivership. When the D&RGW emerged with Judge McCarthy at the helm, then the road started performing, and doing magnificently well until the Anschutz/SP era.
But... compared with the RGS, the D&RG was rolling in the dough.
