If I remember right the Ashbys wanted to do just what you are suggesting some time on the 80's using their big Westside shays as motive power. The idea has merit and would be down right neat if accomplished. Would also have the potential of riding a steam train up a fourteener. I think that the big hindrance was money but there are others on this board who are more knowledgeable of such things.
