Russ,
All K-27's had Stephenson valve gear until the rebuilds started in 1923 or 24. 461 was one of the first 4 rebuilt with piston valves and stephenson valve gear and superheaters added to the boilers. Those were 454, 456, 458, and 461. Walshaerts valve gear replaced Stephonsons in 1926-27 when the engines came in for a rebuild. 452, 452, 455, 459, 463, and 464 were rebuilt between 1926 and early 1929. 462 had piston valves and Walshaerts gear added, but never got superheaters. Was this because of the stock crash? Possibly, but I really don't know. There was a big thread on this during late May and early June. I was the thread starter if that helps for reference purposes.
