I wasn't aware that mainline engines were equipped. Coos Bay Lumber 11 (2-8-2T) is equipped with rail washers, engine operated on steep grades were every little bit helped.
You would be surprised what little changes can affect the increase/decrease in rolling resistance on a train.
I will be the engineer again Monday dumping a 99 car train of corn using 4x 6 axle AC locomtoives set at .14 mph. If the corn slops over the rail in the unloading shed, I can feel it, and see it on the computer.
