Bob Keller:
Besides the construction of new cars for the White Pass there is another project replicating wood passenger cars. You may not be aware of it because it involves standard gauge electric cars.
The Port of Los Angeles is electrifying a portion of its railroad trackage and constructing replicas of small Pacific Electric interurban cars. This will replace a bus shuttle between the cruise boat terminal and a tourist shopping area.
The cars are steel framed with wood interior and exterior and will be operated on FRA regulated rails. I understand that the Port will require a few FRA exemptions for the operation.
The consultant on the project Railway Preservation Resources (John Smatlak) has a web page that includes information and pictures of the cars, etc. At the bottom of his home page click on "San Pedro Trolley;" then go to the "updates" at the bottom of that page to get to the photos.
He has working with him an individual that is knowledgeable with railroad airbrakes and other mechanical aspects.
