pros/cons of flangers?

Looking at Dave's pics of the flangers reminded me of a question I've had for a while. What are the pros and cons of the two different types of flangers. The single vs the splint wing. Also, were they pretty susceptible to derailment? Was one more than the other? Thanks to any who respond.
