#12 does not have her original air pump. The builder's photo shows #12 with a single-lung compressor, but I understand that was swapped for a cross-compound model from the Mt. Rainier Scenic RR during the 1988 restoration. I've never seen that pump run right. When it was working, it wouldn't raise more than 50 psi of brake pressure and had a knack for cutting out altogether when we were headed downgrade. The near-runaway incident recounted on
SL.info is true and caused #12 to be banned from any kind of revenue service until the brakes were ironed out.
The problems with the air pump were reportedly worked out in June, and it now raises 90 psi easily. The brakestand is another matter. We thought the valves were frozen, but they yielded to the gentle persuasion exerted by a pair of 200 lb. engineers. The terms of the sale dictate #12 be delivered with operable airbrakes, so the stand will probably get worked on next.
