The flat found at Whitney has 1 coupler still in place, complete with draft gear. The really cool thing about it is that it is in really good shape. It also has lettering cast into it indicating that it was a former Utah Northern flat. All of the truss rods and related hardware are present, as well as the bolsters. Sorry, no trucks. The brake rigging is also in tact, complete with handbrake, except that the brake wheel is broken.
The snowplow they located is interesting in that it sits on a heavy 20' frame. Ron thinks this was the remains of a tender. This find has a simplex coupler still attached to one end. The bolsters have pins in them, but we doug around and were unable to locate a set of trucks.
At the same site Ron and Scott found a 30# frog, and numerous pieces of 30# rail. I happened to stumble across a flue cleaner.
I am sure there are other items buried just beneath the surface, but we need a metal detector and a small backhoe.
All in all they found some really neat stuff, and will be talking with the property owners about what we found. They had no idea the stuff was there! I guess it all looked like rotting junk.
