476 - May 1968 versus May 2024

On May 28, 1968, engine 476 was preparing to take on coal at the Chama coal loader. Two boys were admiring the engine as the coal loading operation proceeded. I wonder if they realized that this was the last time that 476 would be in Chama and the last time that 476 stopped at the coal tower.

A few minutes later 476 would head west to Gato to run as helper to 478 from Gato to Falfa before running as light engine to Durango.



On May 4, 2024, 476 was leading the Presidential Train into Silverton on Opening Day for the Silverton run. No fake diamond stack here, and no coal in the tender, but 56 years later 476 looked as good as ever.
