A large number of the aluminum containers survived in the Lyden Transport yard north of Ship creek, in the Port of Anchorage.
I was told that they were purchased by one of the agencies cleaning up the beaches after the Exxon Valdez grounding. They were modified to be picked up by helicopters and delivered to beaches where crews loaded them with oil soaked absorbent and debris after which they were pick up up and transported to barges where they were unloaded and the cycle repeated.
All but one or two were rendered for scrap in 2023.
