Sumpter Valley 2nd #5

Here we are on the Sumpter Valley Ry. The caption on the back of this photo identifies this #5 as the former #1, otherwise it would be very hard if not impossible to discern which of the two #5's we are looking at as they were seemingly identical Brooks moguls. Assuming the caption is correct, this is C/N 530 built in 1881 for the Utah & Northern, coming to the Sumpter Valley in late 1890 or early 1891 as one of the first two engines on the line. In 1906 the railway purchased four engines from the Tonopah Railroad numbered 1 through 4, so a renumbering of the existing engines occurred with first #1 became second #5. First #5 Brooks C/N 520 then became 2nd #8. The engine in this photo was traded to the Eureka Nevada in 1912, so we can date this photo as between 1906 and 1912. The scan is from the SVRR Archive.
