The 54th annual Old Threshers Reunion in Mount Pleasant, Iowa will run from Sept2 through Sept6 this year. For those that have never attended the show, it has something for everyone. Steam traction, stationary steam, gas tractors and engines, horses, cars, crafts, music, food, two villages, electric trolleys, and of corse the Midwest Central Railroad. The Railroad, a separate entity from the Old Threshers association, has been operating trains since 1960 on a loop around the grounds.
There have been some big changes on the RR. In January 2003 a new 250x60' building was built to replace the original 1960 shop, that had served as a station and storage for all these years. The old building was in pore condition and was sinking to the point we were having clearance issues. The new building will serve as a museum that will be open in the summer in conjunction with the Old Threshers Heritage museums.
The new mainline (that curves around the building) was completed last year along with one track through the building. This summer the big push was interior rooms and the other two tracks in the building. In the past 6 months a huge amount has been acompished, all by volunteers. The new giftshop will be open for the show, and the ticket counter is in now, the floor in the building has been leveled, and two switches have been put in. Most of this has been done in the last month. The project is still very much a work in progress with lots left to do, but it is real neat to see everything fall together.
For anyone that can make it stop on by, we will be running trains all day every day, two sections at times. Power is an 1891 mogul, 3truck shay, and a Henschel tank engine.
