I bought the car soon after moving to Colorado from an antique dealer who was using it for storage. I learned it had moved around the town of Montrose often, at one time it was painted bright red with silver trim, proof of this was found when I stripped it down to raw wood. Due to the help of several people I found the RGS held an auction in 1952 to dispose of many cars and locos. The auction was held in the local movie theater in Montrose. The auction didn't go well and little was sold. The cars were stripped of all the heavy metal so I purchased many items from the D&S in Durango and got the car looking pretty darn good. When the C&TS said they would put it back into service, no question it's future was going to be bright so off she went. One little note, while lettered for the D&RGW, the car was assigned to the RGS for ore service out of Rico for many years. Also let me add, many interior markings prove that it was in service out of the Pandora in Telluride. If anyone has the book "The Silver San Juans" by Pruitt, there is a fantastic story by Bob Richardson of the movement of this last RGS train out of Rico. A two page picture shows #3223 as he third car back behind loco #461.
