Depending on the engine, it would be a fight to center the bar if the whole boiler is at the valve. You might need to adjust your series of actions depending on what you can do to get the train stopped, but getting the valve center would be crucial.

The grade eastbound at Cumbres isn't terribly exciting in that scenario. Westbound I'd immediately dump the train before fidgeting with anything else.
