Rod seems to be a bit fixated on the conversions from coal to oil. I grew up with oil burners so it doen't seem so radical, and in my view a small price to pay for the ability to more easily and safely preserve steam operation. Now if either railroad still regularly used coaling tipples I might feel a bit differently. Dumping coal into a tender with a front end loader does not have much historic value. In the great scheme of things the change from coal to oil seems to be one of the least intrusive of the many changes that I have watched both railroads undergo since I first visited in 1960. But what remains more or less the same at least for me is hearing steam work hard.
