When the locomotives arrived in Durango and work began to put them in service, the diesel/equipment mechanic at the time decided they all should be named, more out of whimsy than anything, and came up with the names. To my knowledge, they have no connection to any actual person. When it came time to letter them, the painter cutting the letter sets, tongue firmly in cheek, included the names and applied them. The crews refer to them by number rather than by name.
