Sure it's worth a shot, Rod.
We need to be doing everything we can to raise awareness and concern over this issue, but the sad thing is that all the effort and work and worry and ruminating by the railfan community isn't going to amount to a pimple on an elephant's butt when it comes to seeing this through the perspective of the "big picture".
99% of the public doesn't care a whit about steam railroading, and it woudn't be hard to imagine a scenario where after a year of no steam, the efforts of the "environmentalist" community will do everything they can to prevent its return.
I don't write this to imply that everything that can possibly be done to save things the way they are today shouldn't be done, but it appears that Elvis (later years-in drag) has left the building.
It's been a good run, but all things come to pass.
Next year will start the beginning of a new era.
