One the Eureka & Palisade coach, now combine "Palisade" (body at Nevada State Railroad Museum, Boulder City" the underside of the terne metal roof was painted with a mineral red... poorly painted... but painted. Any paint on the top surface of the roof was gone.
Railroad practice was to paint terne metal to protect it from weathering and rust.
