East Tennessee was odd in many ways, sometimes positively so.
The region was quite pro-Union during the Civil War and fielded perhaps as many Union units as Confederate.
Blacks and whites did often work together in that area. Andy Kern, a black WW1 vet, was a respected shop guy for the ET&WNC until he retired there.
Don't get me wrong; I'm sure it was no racial Nirvana, but from what I've read the issues weren't nearly as bad as in other parts of the South.
